TWO Plumtree men were yesterday jailed for assaulting and robbing a villager of his phone worth $22.
Andile Sibanda (29) and Jabulani Masuku (38) used a log to assault Leonard Khuphe, leaving him for dead.
The pair was convicted of attempted murder and robbery by regional magistrate Mark Dzira.
“The State has managed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and both accused are found guilty as charged.
“For attempted murder, each accused is sentenced to nine years in jail of which two years are suspended on condition of good behaviour. For robbery each will serve two years in prison,” said magistrate Dzira.
Prosecuting, Tinashe Dzipe alleged that on November 2 last year, Khuphe left his homestead to intending to meet his wife and daughter who were travelling from Bulawayo.
“When the three started walking back home, they were ambushed by Sibanda and Masuku along a bushy area near Manda Farm. They demanded that the family stand and comply with their orders threatening to use a log they were carrying,” said Dzipe.
“Khuphe tried to resist and Sibanda struck him once with a wooden log on the head and he fell unconscious.
“He started bleeding from the head and Masuku searched him and took his cellphone.”
The court heard that the duo disappeared from the scene and were caught two days later at Dingumuzi suburb in Plumtree.
