TWO people died and five others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned. The accident happened 9km out of Victoria Falls along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway on Saturday at around 4.26PM. When the Chronicle visited the scene-five minutes after the accident had happened, the bodies of the deceased were still on the road in different spots along the route taken by the vehicle as it overturned after veering off the road.
Ambulances from Mars, Victoria Falls District Hospital and municipality had arrived at the scene to ferry the injured to hospital.
Officer Commanding police, Victoria Falls District, Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiona confirmed the death of Akombewa Namtonto, 31, of Chinotimba Township and Florence Tholakhele Mathe, 29, of Mkhosana Township.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle at a bend near Wild Horizons Elephant Camp and it veered of the road and over turned several times before landing on one of its sides.
“Initial investigations by the police indicate that there was some speeding involved but we will wait for the accident valuator and report from Vehicle Inspection Department to really know the cause of the accident,” said Chief Sup Chiona.
He said two people died on the spot and the other five including the driver sustained injuries.
“The injured are admitted to Victoria Falls District Hospital and they are said to be in stable conditions,” he said.
