GWEBI Agricultural College were crowned champions of the Agricultural Colleges Sports Gala that ended at Esigodini on Friday. The sports gala was hosted by Esigodini Agricultural College. Gwebi hauled eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals. They bagged gold in volleyball (men), athletics and chess for both men and women.
The week-long event ended with a soccer final between Esigodini and Rio Tinto with the hosts winning 3-0.
In other finals played yesterday Esigodini thrashed Rio Tinto 32-26 in netball while in women’s volleyball Esigodini won 3-1 over Gwebi.
Last year’s champions Esigodini were second overall with seven gold, four silver and four bronze medals.
Kushinga-Phikelela were third but tied on gold medals with Esigodini.
Agricultural Colleges Sports Association secretary Mtshado Ngwenya praised the organisers of the event.
“The event was excellent and well organised, we usually have three to four days but this time we went for six days, which gave us more time to play and interact,” he said.
Ngwenya challenged the corporate world to chip in with support.
Seven colleges Gwebi, Esigodini, Kushinga-Phikelela, Mlezu, Rio Tinto, Shamva and Chibero took part in the sporting extravaganza.
They competed in athletics, darts, volleyball, netball, chess and soccer.
