Masvingo West legislator Mr Tichaona Mharadze and his Masvingo Central counterpart Mr Jeffreyson Chitando have already openly declared that they would not be seeking re-election on their party’s ticket. Mr Chitando, who is the MDC-T provincial secretary for elections is now said to be eyeing the Masvingo Senatorial seat while the political future of Mr Mharadze is not yet known.
The sources added that Zanu-PF has more than five aspiring candidates, a situation that has forced Mr Mharadze to abandon the contest. He also faced businessman Mr Takanayi Mureyi who filed nomination papers to represent the MDC-T in Masvingo West.
“Mr Mharadze developed cold feet and informed his party that he was paving way for Mr Mureyi, who is now the sole candidate for MDC-T in Masvingo West. Mr Mharadze feared embarrassment by Mr Mureyi who has painted more than 23 schools in the constituency. He has also drilled more than 10 boreholes.
“He (Mr Mureyi) is also paying schools fees for many orphans in Masvingo West and helping in the repair of bridges. Mr Mharadze did not do anything even after getting funds from the Constituency Development Fund.
“He knows that he was going to lose to Mr Mureyi and that he can’t stand a chance against Zanu-PF. That party has covered a lot of ground in Masvingo West,’’ said the MDC-T source who declined to be named.
Mr Mureyi confirmed the development.
“It is true that I will contest in Masvingo West on an MDC-T ticket. I heeded the people’s call to represent them and I will focus on developing the area,’’ said Mr Mureyi.
Businesswoman and Ziliwaco provincial chairperson Cde Namatirai Chivanga and provincial executive member Cde Ted Muzoroza are among some of the candidates aspiring to represent Zanu-PF in Masvingo West.
Mr Chitando, however, denied that he was now afraid of facing Zanu-PF after he courted the ire of the electorate by abusing the CDF money.
“Its true I am not going to contest the Masvingo Central seat. I am now going for something much bigger as a senior MDC-T member. I will be contesting for the Masvingo senatorial seat. I think it is more prestigious considering my status in the MDC-T,’’ he said.
