admitted to a local hospital where they are receiving treatment under police guard. According to police sources, the two had so far cleared three armed robbery cases involving taxis.
It is alleged that on Saturday night, the two robbed a taxi which they later used to commit other offences in and around the city. They later drove to Mufakose where they parked the vehicle at a car park in the area.
On Sunday at around 5am, the two went to the car park to collect the vehicle but came across members of the CID crack team who were waylaying for them after a tip-off.
The two attempted to flee but were shot and injured leading to their arrest.
They were found in possession of a fake pistol. Early this month three people lost cash and valuables to armed robbers in separate incidents as cases of highway robberies increase unabated. Some robbers were also using kombis to ambush their prey.
Last month, police arrested 10 suspected armed robbers allegedly targeting travellers and motorists along the country’s highways. The suspects were arrested in separate incidents in Chinhoyi and Murehwa. Six were arrested in Murehwa while the other four were arrested in Chinhoyi.
The arrests led to the recovery of five vehicles, two in Chinhoyi and three in Murehwa, which the two gangs used in the commission of the offences. The police crack team swooped on the 10 following reports of both gangs’ tactics and the type of vehicles they used. According to statistics, a total of 156 armed robberies were recorded last year in Harare province alone, prompting the police to carry out crime awareness campaigns this year.
