Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the arrest of Kozani Chijokwe (30) of Bindura who is detained at Bindura Police Station.
He said the incident occurred on Saturday night along Oak Street near a railway crossing, while Governor Dinha was driving in his car in the company of three other people.
“He intended to drop these people at their respective addresses,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
“While he was driving along Oak Street and upon approaching Piki nightclub, Governor Dinha observed a certain vehicle following him.”
“When he was approaching the railway line, the vehicle which was following him overtook his car.
“In the process of overtaking, the car was very close to the governor’s car such that he had to swerve in order to avoid a side swipe.”
After the incident, Governor Dinha followed the car in order to warn Chijokwe against reckless driving.
He caught up with Chijokwe at Aerodrome Business Centre where he disembarked from his vehicle and moved towards him.
On seeing Governor Dinha approaching, Chijokwe suddenly started his vehicle and drove it towards the governor, hitting him in the process.
Chief Supt Nyathi said Governor Dinha fell to the ground after being hit by the car and members of the public gave chase but could not apprehend Chijokwe.
“A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of Chijokwe through the assistance of people who knew him,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
“Governor Dinha was treated at a local hospital and discharged.”
