$20 000 for Idai victims

Midlands Bureau
Shurugwi miners have raised $20 000 for victims of Cyclone Idai which ravaged parts of eastern Zimbabwe, killing hundreds of people and leaving many more displaced. Shurugwi district administrator Mr Langton Mpeta said the miners have since handed over the donations to his office.

He commended the miners for showing support to the Government cause by donating.
“We are very happy that the miners in Shurugwi have also taken heed to the Governments’ call for us to donate towards national disasters such as this,” said Mr Mpeta.

“We know miners are always in the bush doing their job, but they have found time to organise themselves and donate $20 000 towards the Cyclone Idai victims.”

Mr Mupeta said he will be handing over the donations to the provincial minister’s office.
“I have told the miners that we have to go together and hand over the donation to the minister’s office,” he said. “The donation will complement what the district has already donated.”

One of the organisers of the Shurugwi miners’ donation committee, Mr Nicholas Gara, said they were still receiving more donations from various miners operating in the town.
