HARARE province was the overall winner of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) track and field athletics competition held at Midlands Christian College from March 26-29. Athletes from the province scooped 15 gold medals, 11 silver and nine bronze, while defending champions Bulawayo Province, occupied a distant ninth position out of the 10 provinces, which participated at this year’s competitions.
Masvingo Province, which came second, had 11 gold, 11 silver and six bronze. In third place was Mashonaland West with 11 gold, eight silver and 18 bronze.
Manicaland had 11 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze, followed by Midlands with eight gold, six silver and five bronze.
Mashonaland East was in sixth place with five gold, eight silver and nine bronze, followed by Mashonaland Central with four gold, six silver and six bronze.
Matabeleland South was in eighth place with three gold, five silver and four bronze. Bulawayo had two gold, six silver and two bronze. Matabeleland North anchored the table with one gold, two silver and two bronze. In respect of the Under-21 and Under-18 competitions Harare Province came first, the Under-20 category was won by Mashonaland Central while Under 15 category went to Mashonaland South with Under-12 category going to Mashonaland West Province.
Under-17 boys from Harare also scooped the famous medley relay.
Nash president Mr Arthur Maphosa said the track and field competition had brought together the best athletes from the country’s 10 provinces.
“We celebrate the beauty of sport. Sport is a unifier as it straddles age, religious, political and colour boundaries,” he said.
