Munyaradzi Kunaka (26) of Unit N in Chitungwiza pleaded not guilty to robbery charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazini Ncube but was found guilty of attempted robbery.
Mr Ncube sentenced Kunaka to 24 months in prison but set-aside four months for five years on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Mr Ncube noted that cases of robbery were on the increase and the courts had to take stern measures.
“Robbery is a very serious offence since it involves a lot of planning and normally executed at night it therefore, calls for more deterrent measures.
“You robbed this man in the dark because you wanted to avoid detection”, said Mr Ncube.
Appearing for the State Mr Henry Muringani told the court that on September 29, Terrence Chiwundo was walking along a certain road at Unit N shops going home when he met Kunaka and his unknown accomplice.
One of them grabbed him on the neck and started demanding cash.
He then stabbed him on the jaw and on the forehead with a screwdriver. Chiwundo managed to free himself and identified Kunaka.
When they realised that they have been identified, they stabbed him on the spine and fled from the scene without taking anything.
