A 20-year-old girl landed in hot soup last week after she allegedly exchanged fake money amounting to US$40 with a vendor at Bulawayo Centre.

It is said that Kelly Gugulethu Ngwenya (20) with two unknown men approached Rufaro Changachirere (20) at her vending stall saying she wanted to change her US$40 into local currency.

Changachirere reportedly agreed to change the money using the rate of the day which was US$10: $150 at the time.

Changachirere handed Ngwenya the $600 and Ngwenya allegedly gave it to one of the unknown men that was in her company.

“Soon after they left, I showed my workmate Mai Tari the money and she said it was fake money. They were still close by so we chased them. When they saw that we were following them they ran away,” said Changachirere.

Court papers say the two men were able to escape the wrath of the two ladies. Ngwenya was captured by the duo and battered before she was handed over to the police.

The pair reportedly recovered another fake US$20 from Ngwenya.

The $600 was not recovered.

Appearing before Bulawayo magistrate Ulukile Ndlovu, Ngwenya pleaded not guilty and denied ever being in contact with Changachirere.

She was remanded out of custody for continuation of trial on 4 December.
