More than 2000 youths in Harare are set to receive free first aid training on Saturday as part of a local company’s initiative to empower young people.
Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire is expected to grace the occasion.
The course, which is being facilitated by the CEO of Discovery Ambulance, Mr David Munowenyu, will be rolled out to other provinces.
“We are targeting mainly youths and we will be moving from province to province,” said Mr Munowenyu.
“This initiative is aimed at making sure that youths are equipped with first aid skills.”
Mr Munowenyu said the initiative will empower youths to be independent.
“We believe that the first 15 minutes after an emergency are crucial, so the idea is to equip everyone with first aid knowledge,” he said.
“This will help youths to participate more in the medical services industry and help in producing more qualified nurse aides.”
One of the intended beneficiaries, Mr Bradley Chigiji welcomed the initiative.
“As youths in Harare, I am optimistic that this initiative will elevate our status in the society,” he said.
Mr Tawanda Mapuranga said the initiative has come at the right time as the country is on a drive to remove youths from the streets and make sure the streets are drug-free.
