‘No going back on empowerment’

Takunda Maodza Senior Reporter
MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai came under fire from a cross-section of Zimbabweans yesterday following his public  admission that his party was totally opposed to black economic empowerment.
Zanu-PF yesterday reiterated that the empowerment drive was unstoppable.

Government is implementing the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment programme, which compels foreign-owned firms with an asset value of US$500 000 or more to cede 51 percent stake to indigenous Zimbabweans. Addressing a rally on Sunday in Marondera, Mr Tsvangirai said MDC-T was totally against the programme spearheaded by the Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Ministry.

Said Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo: “It is clear that he (Tsvangirai) is singing his masters’ song. We have information that they are being told to oppose the indigenisation programme. He is parroting what his masters are saying and Zimbabweans must see the enemy as it is. The people of Zimbabwe will decide.”

Thousands bid Dhewa farewell

From Jonathan Mbiriyamveka in KWEKWE
THOUSANDS of fans thronged Mbizo Stadium here yesterday to give Tongai Moyo a huge send off. The rare spectacle  brought the town to a standstill as fans, relatives, politicians and fellow musicians bade farewell to Dhewa.
His songs were being played in pubs, commuter omnibuses and private cars as people mourned the Utakataka Express fro-ntman.

Bob Nyabinde, who is also from Kwekwe and Jah Prayzah entertained mourners, while his band also took to the stage.
Later, Dhewa’s body was taken to his rural home in Sesombe, Zhombe, for burial today at 11am. The cortege caused a traffic jam as fans blocked the road chanting “Dhewa makaoma”.

The singer’s death brought together people from various walks of life who thronged Mbizo Stadium to bid him farewell.

Cement prices fall

Freeman Razemba and Mary Kashumba
CEMENT prices that reached a peak of US$22 per 50kg bag recently as dealers cashed in on shortages spawned by a plant  breakdown at one of the country’s major producers have dropped drastically as supplies firm.
Cement is now selling at between US$12,50 and US$15 per bag.

There was a near stampede at Mohammed Mussa Wholesalers as customers jostled to buy cement at US$12,50 per 50kg bag of PC15.
Though cement was still selling at high prices in Msasa and Magaba, indications were that prices were falling after customers heeded advice from cement producers to shun profiteers.
A further reduction in prices is expected as hardwares continue receiving supplies.
