TEN members of the same family perished – eight on the spot – while 10 others sustained serious injuries when their Toyota  Dyna truck collided head-on with a Nissan UD truck on Wednesday.
The Sithole family members who were on their way to a funeral in Gokwe died on Wednesday at 7:30pm at the 72,5km peg along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road.

National Traffic Police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome said there were 24 passengers in the Toyota Dyna.
“Ten people died, eight of them on the spot and 10 others were injured. There were 24 people in the Toyota truck,” he said.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana said most of the people in the truck were related while a few were family friends.

“A Nissan UD was pulling a trailer carrying bags of maize and was travelling towards Kwekwe with a driver and one passenger on board. When the driver of the Nissan UD truck approached the 72,5km peg, the Toyota Dyna truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction, encroached into his lane resulting in the head-on collision,” he said.

Mixed reactions over Malema’s suspension

SOUTH AFRICA’S ruling African National Congress yesterday suspended its firebrand Youth League president, Cde Julius  Malema, for five years after finding him guilty of sowing division in the party.
The league’s spokesperson Cde Floyd Shivambu was also suspended for three years for bringing the party into disrepute by making a statement about the Botswana leadership and for swearing at a journalist.

But, Cde Malema said he would appeal against the verdict within 14 days as outlined in the ruling.
He can contest the outcome to the ANC’s national executive committee headed by party president Cde Jacob Zuma.
Announcing the verdict, Mr Derek Hanekom, head of the ANC disciplinary panel, said Cde Malema had been found guilty of sowing serious divisions in the party and of bringing the 99-year-old liberation movement into disrepute.
