Grain loan scheme reintroduced to avert hunger
Elita Chikwati Agriculture Reporter
GOVERNMENT has reintroduced the grain loan scheme in which communal farmers get grain from the Grain Marketing Board and repay after harvest. The scheme is expected to benefit 600 000 households in grain deficit areas for the next four months.
This comes after Cabinet realised that the weather across the country indicated that some households will not be able to harvest enough grain.
Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Joseph Made said yesterday that some farmers could not harvest crops early enough to cover food deficit.
He said Cabinet found it necessary that besides the traditional assistance to vulnerable communities, those able to farm be assisted with grain.
Minister Made said the scheme will benefit communal, old resettlement, small-scale and A2 farmers.
“A household will be assisted with a 50kg bag of maize per month,” he said. “We will review it if there is need for more grain.”
President attends Kabila’s inauguration
PRESIDENT Mugabe joined thousands of Congolese yesterday to witness the swearing in of DRC President Joseph Kabila in Kinshasa. President Kabila was last week confirmed winner of the November 28 elections by that country’s Supreme Court.
Opposition leader Mr Etienne Tshisekedi has however, rejected the poll outcome. He is planning his own inauguration on Friday.
In his speech at the AU Village in Kinshasa, President Kabila pledged to safeguard national unity and allow himself to be guided only by respect for human rights.
He praised the Congolese for their “political maturity” since the start of the electoral process.
“You were given a choice between fanciful promises and inflammatory rhetoric on the one hand and the consolidation of peace and stability on the other hand,” he said.
“We are going to pursue an improvement of the business climate to better serve investors. We are also going to pursue and accelerate the reconstruction of the country.”
He said reconstruction will focus on communication infrastructure in the vast country, which is over half the size of the European
New steps to ease border congestion
Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau
CONGESTION at Beitbridge Border Post has forced the Government to intervene and en-force recommendations made last year for the smooth movement of both human and vehicle traffic.
Passing through the border post in the last few days had become a nightmare as in some cases it took more than eight hours for a person to go through.
There were long, winding queues on the Zimbabwean side of the border.
Finance Minister Tendai Biti and toured the border post yesterday.
The ministers ensured traffic was separated into returning residents, buses, tourists and visitors, commercial and private motorists for easy clearance.
Prior to this, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and the Department of Immigration were lumping the traffic, causing congestion.
