Teachers report for duty despite strike threats

MOST teachers who threatened to strike reported for duty when schools opened for the first term yesterday amid assurances from Government that it is ready to meet civil servants on salaries and working conditions.
Teachers, mostly those affiliated to the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, had threatened to strike at the beginning of the first term yesterday, but it was business as usual at most schools.

Public Service Deputy Minister Andrew Langa yesterday said Government would meet workers representatives today.
“We are ready to meet them tomorrow (today). I have already met with my Minister (Lucia Matibenga) and agreed we needed time to discuss with the workers,” he said.

“We also have to share with them the problem we have, but we have to come up with a way forward with regards to their position.”
The civil servants, who are demanding US$538 for the least paid Government worker, last Friday agreed to storm Minister Matibenga’s offices today seeking an audience with her over salaries.
