High divorce cases cause for concern
Masvingo Correspondent
COMMUNITY leaders in Gutu in Masvingo Province have raised concern over the increasing cases of divorce in their area and called on youths to appreciate the values of marriage.
In an interview on the sidelines of a field day at Mr John Manyemba in Hwekwete Ward, the local chief, Chief Cephas Makatura Chitsa, expressed dismay over what he described as moral decadence, as cases of divorce were always going up.
Chief Chitsa says the rate at which he presided over cases of divorce was not only worrying, but had made marriage a non- revered institution.
“Almost every week, I preside over six cases of divorce. The worrying scenario is that I normally handle cases that involve young couples and that is a cause of major concern as young people are thought to be leaders of tomorrow yet they are the merchants of family disintegration,” he said.
“In my own assessment the problems that young couples have is that they have a serious misunderstanding on gender balance. I feel that marriages do not last because of the misconstruing of equal rights. There is a general misconception on the issue of equal rights and the issue has badly crept into the heads of many young couples.
