30 perish on the roads

Mary Kugwa Herald Reporter
A Mufakose woman and her tenant’s daughter died instantly on Saturday afternoon when they were crushed by a truck driven by a joy-riding car-cleaner, bringing to 30 the number of people killed in traffic accidents during the Easter Holiday.
Gogo Gina Rhodesia (64) and Faith Kujeka (5) were run over while seated in front of the gate at around 4:20pm.
Police spokesperson Inspector Blessmore Chishaka said the driver, identified as Tatenda, had asked the owner of the Toyota truck if he could clean the car for him.
However, Tatenda reportedly later went on a joy-ride that led to the death of the two.
“The driver of a Toyota twincab was driving due East when he lost control of the car killing two people on the spot,” he said.
He said police investigations were in progress.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority wants Zimbabwe to revert to the system of a vehicle having a single registration number from first registration to final destruction instead of changing this number with each change of ownership.

The tax authority reckons that the new system allows many to evade paying taxes and makes it very difficult to keep track of cars, especially those that would have been smuggled.
