Councillors on warpath
Chronicle Reporter
THE controversial Bulawayo housing stands issue took a new dimension with councillors reportedly blocking a special council meeting that was scheduled to discuss the issue last week.
Council was reported recently to be demanding deposits of up to $4 200 on residential stands in three days from desperate home seekers, who were told to pay the money or risk losing their stands.
The meeting that was scheduled for Thursday had to be postponed because councillors accused council officials of trying to “hijack” the meeting and influence resolutions when a number of councillors who are vocal and knowledgeable about the issue were out of town.
Commenting on the cancelled meeting, a councillor who declined to be named, said things were not being done above board in the city’s housing department.
“We decided that the meeting should not go ahead because a majority of the people who are knowledgeable about council’s housing resolutions were not present. Most of them announced last week that they would be out of town. We were therefore surprised when a notice for the meeting was issued when it was known they would be absent,” said the councillor.
