Champion women’s rights, Africa urged

Obert Chifamba Senior Reporter
PRESIDENT Mugabe yesterday challenged governments and civic society across Africa to champion and protect the rights of women and the girl child.

He was speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Global Power Women Network Africa chapter in Harare.
He said the launch of the Global Power Women Network Africa chapter took the issues of women emancipation and empowerment a step further.

“After the launch, the real work will begin and call for the same passion, unity of purpose and consistency in pursuing the goals which have characterised this women’s network this far.

“Of particular note will be the challenge of giving unstinting support to women candidates of every cue and cry; of varying professional qualifications; driven by different talents and capabilities to realise their potential in the collaborative work of Global Power Women Network, the African Union and UNAids,” he said.

High Court to rule on PM’s bid to sue President

Daniel Nemukuyu Senior Court Reporter
THE High Court is expected to rule on whether or not Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is allowed to sue the President without permission from the court.
Lawyers representing the President and Provincial Governors, Mr Terence Hussein and Mr Gerald Mlotshwa, raised the preliminary challenge before the main case in which PM Tsvangirai is seeking to nullify the appointment of provincial governors by the President.

PM Tsvangirai, through his lawyers Advocate Thabani Mpofu and Mr Selby Hwacha, argues that the President erred by not consulting him when appointing the governors. Judge President George Chiweshe yesterday indefinitely reserved ruling on the preliminary point after hearing arguments from both parties.

Mr Hussein, appearing for President Mugabe, submitted that the application by PM Tsvangirai should be dismissed because the High Court rules did not allow him to do so.

RBZ blacklists Zimplats . . . blocks platinum mine’s access to banking services

Business Reporters
THE Reserve Bank has directed banks to stop offering banking services to Zimplats after the platinum producer defied an order to repatriate funds in its offshore accounts. In February, the Government put in place a policy compelling mining firms to close offshore accounts and transfer the money into local accounts, but Zimplats did not comply.

RBZ Governor Dr Gideon Gono said this will not be allowed to continue, warning that any bank that did not take heed will face “serious penalties”.

RBZ senior division chief (Exchange Control) Mr Morris Mpofu yesterday directed banks not to process any transactions from Zimplats.
“Due to failure by Zimplats to adhere with the provisions of this directive to close their offshore accounts and transfer their funds to a bank onshore as directed, exchange control has taken corrective administrative measures to enforce
