18 fuel companies face prosecution

Eighteen fuel companies face prosecution for operating without licences in violation of the provisions of the Petroleum Act.
This follows an ultimatum issued by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority to the petroleum industry operators to register with the agency before end of May 2012.
The Herald investigations revealed that some of the fuel companies were in breach of various council by-laws and posing a serious fire risk to the public.
Other fuel firms were also storing fuel in water tanks instead of the required standard fuel tanks.
Zera chief executive officer Engineer Gloria Magombo confirmed yesterday that police were already investigating cases with a view to prosecuting the 18 firms for safety risk.
“As the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority we are aware that there could be non-compliance by some fuel companies that are not licensed and, to this end, have intensified efforts to weed out unlicensed fuel operators who are a safety risk.
“So far 18 fuel operators are to be prosecuted this month for operating without a licence,” she said.
Lawmakers seek US$8,5m vehicle loan facility

At least 284 legislators have approached financial institutions seeking a US$8,52 million loan facility to import new vehicles duty free.
There are 84 Senators and 199 members of the Lower House with each seeking a US$30 000 loan.
The legislators want banks to assist them acquire new vehicles to replace the ones they claim are either accident-damaged or unroadworthy.
If the deal sails through, some legislators will end up having three vehicles each after receiving Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe cars and those bought by Treasury.
Interestingly, the current Parliament is expected to end early next year, while most banks are offering 24-month loans.
A joint caucus meeting convened by legislators from Zanu-PF and the MDC formations discussed the issue and feedback on the meeting that took place between their representatives and financial institutions.
Welfare committee chairperson Cde Paddy Zhanda confirmed the development, saying the latest vehicle facility was an initiative that did not involve Parliament or Government.
Ruling on PM’s wedding today

PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says the High Court has no jurisdiction to deal with the urgent application that seeks to stop his wedding on Saturday.
In the preliminary points raised by the PM’s lawyers before the main interdict application yesterday, the premier contends that his estranged partner, Ms Locardia Karimatsenga Tembo, could have exhausted the other remedies provided for in the Marriages Act before approaching the High Court.
Advocate Thabani Mpofu, instructed by Mr Innocent Chagonda of Artherstone and Cook, appeared for PM Tsvangirai and his new wife Ms Elizabeth Macheka.
Mr Everson Samukange, Mr Dumisani Mthombeni and Mr Tafadzwa Hungwe of Venturas and Samukange represented Ms Karimatsenga.
The PM argues that the law provided that any objections to the wedding should be sent to the magistrate who issued the marriage licence.
After receiving the objection, the magistrate in the current case, Mr Munamato Mutevedzi, would conduct an inquiry.
