Buscod workers to get $4 layoff packages

Nokuthaba Mathema

WORKERS at Buscod Group of Supermarkets will get between $4 and $17 as packages beginning next week against the expected $260 to $500 they claim to be owed.

In an interview yesterday, the managing director of Buscod, Mr Dzvamu Dembwe, said the more than 400 workers would be paid in batches of 10 people every week.

He said last year’s outstanding November and December salaries will be settled in line with contracts the workers signed.

“We will pay them the 2012 outstanding November and December salaries that range from $4 to $17 because that is the money we owe them. The amount is based on the contracts they signed when they first got the jobs. If they feel otherwise, they are free to go to the Labour Court to contest the issue,” said Mr Dembwe.

“The $260 to $500 of unpaid salaries demanded by these guys totals to about $150 000 and is an exaggeration.
