Gold panning activities lead to closure of Kwekwe school

Midlands Bureau Chief

THE Environmental Management Agency Board of Directors has ordered the temporary closure of part of Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe to avert possible danger after the school infrastructure was extensively damaged by illegal gold panners.

An apparently livid team of EMA board members led by board chairperson, Professor Sheunesu Mpepereki, said at an all stakeholders meeting held at the school on Monday that the activities of illegal gold panners within the school premises should immediately be stopped as they were threatening the lives of the nearly 1 000 pupils at the school.

“Some of the structures here could collapse any time given the extensive damage done to the infrastructure by illegal gold panners. We are staring at a possible big disaster that can embarrass us if nothing is done to address the challenge. A number of children’s lives are at stake.

Mzingwane River polluted

Chronicle Reporter

A monumental environmental and humanitarian disaster looms in Matabeleland South where the main source of water, Mzingwane River, has been heavily polluted by uncontrolled mining activities.

Several irrigation schemes in the arid province have shut down due to siltation of the river and major dams like Zhobe and Silalabuhwa are under threat, as dangerous chemicals used in mining are flowing into the dams

The river supplies major towns like Beitbridge, West Nicholson and Colleen Bawn with water while a majority of livestock farmers in the province depend on it.

During a tour of parts of the river in Esigodini yesterday, the Environmental Management (EMA) board was shown gaping tunnels and craters, some up to 20 metres deep, along the riverbed.

The Board immediately called for stakeholders, especially the local communities to unite and stop companies or individual intending to mine along the river without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

A Chinese company, Tapin Private Limited is accused of causing most of the damage, in the two years that it has been mining gold along the river.
