21st Feb music fiesta

bigger and better with performances by some of the best musicians in Zimbabwe and the region.
Running under the theme: “A stand against sanctions 2011”, the gala celebrates the life of visionary leader, freedom fighter and statesman, President Mugabe born on February 21, 1924.
On the bill is Winky D, Tongai Moyo, Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima, Hosiah Chipanga, Mahendere Brothers, Mbare Chimurenga Choir, Gift Case Amuli of the “Wamakatuka” fame, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and Sandra Ndebele.
Dancehall DJ Winky D is arguably one of the top draw cards at this all night gala.
Winky D is at the top of his game having scooped two Nama 2010 gongs as well as several chart topping hits up his sleeves. The Kambuzuma star has a reputation of giving memorable performances every time he takes to the stage.
Now his fan base includes both the young and the mature crowds as his lyrics relate to everyone, rich or poor.
But that is not all, Winky D’s approach – to speak on behalf of ghetto youths – has made him even more relevant to all and sundry.
And humility has become part of Winky D, aka Bigiman, who only a few years back was a run of the mill dancehall artiste.
He commands a huge following and is ready to take on everyone who crosses his path with his lyrical prowess.
On the other hand, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and the Mahendere Brothers are expected to give a holy note to the gala.
The gospel artistes are scheduled to perform a choreographed act as they sing their new and old songs.
Another big draw card is Botswana energetic dancer Slizer, who is expected to make a grand entrance as she is billed to perform alongside the strong line up of local musicians.
Also expected to shine is the South African Afro-pop group – Platform One – which returns for yet another romance with their fans.
Mbare Chimurenga Choir, whose fan base continues to grow in leaps and bounds, is likely to repeat a thrilling performance similar to the one the group staged at the Unity gala at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare. The choir has become a success story after the release of their popular tracks “Nyatsoteerera” and “VaMugabe Vanofamba Nemamonya” among others.
The crew’s songs, which are not only topping the charts on the airwaves, have also become the most popular ring tones
It can be argued that the group will give nothing but the very best in music and dance.
Veteran musician Cde Chinx as well as resurgent sungura star Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo are expected to serenade music lovers with their hits.
Dhewa, currently riding high on the charts with his new album “Toita Basa” that features the hit “Ndiro Yababa”, is another major draw card at the gala.
Besides music, Dhewa is also a favourite of many when it comes to choreography and stage presence.
The 21st February Movement gala celebrations seek to promote and empower Zimbabwean talent.
The annual celebrations that coincide with President Mugabe’s birthday started in 1986 with a view to teaching youths about social obligations and their national heritage.
Government representatives, ministers and diplomats are expected to grace the gala, which has been pencilled to start at 6pm until the wee hours of tomorrow and admission is absolutely free.
