The Mhondoro-Ngezi Rural District Council has drilled at least 226 boreholes in all its wards to ensure safe drinking water in the district. The local authority is working on drilling 16 more boreholes.
In an interview recently, Mhondoro-Ngezi council chairman Councillor Ephraim Chengeta said the bulk of the boreholes were drilled on a commercial basis.
“Mhondoro-Ngezi RDC is in the process of drilling a total of 242 boreholes in this district,” he said. “We have so far drilled 226 boreholes, of which 215 were drilled on a commercial basis and 11 were donated by the local authority.
“The 11 boreholes were drilled at public utilities, schools and clinics in the council area. We have also started drilling more boreholes in all our 16 wards in this district and each ward will get one borehole.”
Cllr Chengeta said the local authority was drilling boreholes using internal funds and contributions from the community.
“As council, we have mobilised funds for the borehole project, while the community also assisted us with funds to drill more,” he said.
“We applaud our community for always supporting us in developmental projects, which we carry out in our area.”
Provision of safe drinking water, Cllr Chengeta said, was the local authority’s priority.
“We want to make sure that all our wards have access to clean and safe drinking water,” he said. “Adequate water supply to the community remains our priority.”
Mhondoro-Ngezi RDC is rated as one of the best performing rural local authorities in Mashonaland West province and has won several awards thans to its various income-generating projects. The council has also bought trucks and equipment, including rigs and a gold mill.
