A 49-year-old Honde Valley man has been sentenced to an effective 24 years in prison for raping his nine-year-old niece.
The man was initially sentenced to 30 years before six years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
In a statement yesterday, the National Prosecuting Authority said sometime in December 2021, the man followed the nine-year-old girl to a well about 100m away from her homestead in Mutasa.
He is said to have dragged her to a banana plantation close to the well and raped her once.
The NPA said he also raped the complainant again in September last year, while she was digging sweet potatoes.
“The matter came to light when the complainant went to her mother’s place and told her about the rape incidents. The mother then made a report to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person,” the NPA said.
