Zvishavane Town Council has embarked on a road, water and sewer rehabilitation programme worth $246 000 to cater for its fast growing population. The establishment of the Midlands State University Campus in the small mining town has also contributed to population growth. Town secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said the town’s ageing sewer is now dilapidated, which leads to constant blockages.
“The sewer system is now in a bad state and can no longer accommodate the fast growing population. The sewer system capacity can no longer accommodate Zvishavane population, which in turn results in blockages and sewer bursts. So we have started rehabilitating the hospital sewer line as we move to other areas,” he said.
Mr Mukutu said they will also rehabilitate their roads, most of which were damaged by heavy rains early this year.
“Our road network is in a bad state and need to be rehabilitated because most of it was damaged by the heavy rains that fell at the beginning of the year. We also intend to tar all gravel roads in Makusha and Mandava suburbs,” he said.
The council has been given an ultimatum by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) to fix burst sewer pipes.
