A total of 28 babies were born on Christmas Day in Bulawayo’s three main hospitals.
The largest number of babies was born at Mpilo Central Hospital which recorded 18 babies while United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) recorded eight babies and Mater Dei recorded two babies.
One of the mothers had her second Christmas baby at UBH. “I am overjoyed to give birth on Christmas Day as we will not celebrate Christmas but birthdays for my children as this is my second Christmas baby,” said the visibly excited Sikhathele Maguranyanga.
When a Chronicle news crew visited the hospitals yesterday the officials said most mothers were in good health and had been discharged.
Mpilo hospital matron, Ethel Mcingolwane, said among the 18 babies born 10 were girls.
“Our first baby was delivered soon after midnight and one of the babies was born through caesarean operation while another conceived through vacuum extraction,” said matron Mcingolwane.
At Mater Dei a boy and a girl were born.
UBH matron Pauline Makhuyana said of the eight babies born, four were males and four girls. She said seven babies were delivered normally while one was born through caesarian section.
“Our biggest baby was a boy who weighed 3.825 kilogrammes,” said matron Makhuyana.
At UBH the news crew managed to speak with mothers of the Christmas babies.
Fungai Chiutsi, one of the mothers said: “I am happy that my baby was born on Christmas a blessed day when we celebrate the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ.”
