3 conmen dupe vendors

Court Reporter
THREE Harare men collected fees from vendors in the city daily after masquerading as council employees. Clemence Maimba (24), Bernard Ncube (25) and Stephen Chatindo (38) allegedly created space for more than 70 vendors along Mbuya Nehanda Street.

It is alleged they would collect $6 per vendor.

The three appeared in court on Saturday last week charged with fraud and were remanded in custody.

They were yesterday granted $100 bail each by magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

The prosecution had opposed bail.

They were remanded to May 19.

The State is alleging that in February the trio went to Mbuya Nehanda Street and blocked a pavement opposite Gulf Complex where they created a vending space for vendors.

They allocated 75 vendors space to sell their wares and charged each one of them $6 a day on the pretext the money was going to the council.
