adminEmergency Management Agency (Nema) Yushau Shuaib confirmed the incident to Xinhua, but was unable to give the exact casualty figures.
However, rescue officials at the scene of the incident confirmed that three corpses including the suicide bomber, a woman and a child had been evacuated from the Catholic Church cathedral near Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State.
“The dead and injured persons have been taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital and rescue officials are on top of the situation with the military officers that were quickly deployed to cordon-off the area,” said a top rescue official who pleaded for anonymity.
The rescue official added that due to the various degrees of injury sustained by some of the casualties, the death toll might increase if proper medical attention was not given to the victims.
In a text message sent to Xinhua, Nema’s spokesperson had explained the suicide bomber detonated his explosives very close to the Catholic cathedral. According to the text message, rescue officials were still combing the area in search of more casualties of the yesterday’s blast.
No group has claimed responsibility for now.
On June 3, at least 12 people were killed and several others were injured when a suicide bomber from the Boko Haram group attacked a church in the northern city of Bauchi, in which mostly children and women were the casualties. — Xinhua.
