Three more men appeared in court in connection with the murder of a police officer whom they allegedly robbed of US$48 and mobile phone. Shadreck Binze (26), Mathew Murehwa (23) and Daniel Mabhena (18) were on Monday not formally charged when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo.

The trio is facing murder charges and were advised to apply for bail at the High Court. They were remanded in custody to October 22 so that they could be jointly charged with Raymond Maguri (25) of house number 6640 Kuwadzana 5 and Alois Samuel (24) of Epworth who had already appeared in court.

Prosecutor Mr Tungamirai Chakurira alleges that on September 28, the deceased Timothy Mbova, reported for duty at Harare Central Police Station.

It is the State case that he was deployed to the Chibuku Road to Fame Show at Harare Showgrounds from 10am to 2am the following day.
After completing his duty the police officer went to Harare Central Police Station where he was paid US$48, the court heard.

It is alleged that at the station, he changed into civilian clothing and packed his uniform in a satchel.
He left the station to look for transport to Mabvuku where he stayed.

He had his Nokia X2 cellphone. At around 5.15am the police officer was found dead, lying half naked along Twentydales Road in Hatfield, it is alleged. A post-mortem revealed that he died of suffocation.

On October 1, the police received information that Maguri was in possession of Mbova’s cellphone. He was arrested and the cellphone was recovered.

He in turn implicated Samuel, leading to his arrest. Samuel implicated Binze and Murehwa as the ones who sold the deceased’s cellphone to him.

On October 11 follow-ups were made leading to the arrest of the two.
Upon being questioned they implicated Mabhena as the one who sold the cellphone to them leading to his arrest.
