30,000 in need of ARVs in Masvingo

THIRTY thousand people in Masvingo province are not on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) due to shortage of drugs, the National Aids Council (Nac) has said.
A total of 73,451 HIV people are on Art in the province and the council says the figure is far below their expectations.
According to available data, 26,273 people on ART are males while 47,178 are females.

The province’s HIV prevalence rate is 14 percent.
Chiredzi leads the province’s seven districts with 15,222 people on ART while Masvingo rural has the lowest number of 5,951 people.
In an interview, Masvingo NAC provincial co-ordinator Evos Makoni said the majority of people in the province were not aware of their status.

He said many of these people only know of their CD4 count after they had fallen ill and are admitted to hospital.  “The situation is likely to improve soon as we expect the drug supply to improve.”
