A 34-year-old Bulawayo woman has been arrested and is set to appear in court on charges of illegal possession of ivory.
Police sprang into action after receiving a tip-off that the woman, identified as Milliam, was in possession of ivory bangles and was looking for potential buyers.
In a statement, acting Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said detectives raided the suspect at Bradfield Shopping Centre in Bulawayo.
“The detectives raided the accused person at Bradfield Shopping Centre, Bulawayo, where, upon arrival, they introduced themselves to the accused and conducted a search in a brown carrier bag she was carrying. This led to the recovery of 42 polished ivory bangles and 12 polished ivory stamps of different sizes and shapes,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
She said Milliam failed to produce a licence or permit allowing her to possess or sell the ivory items and was subsequently arrested.
Asst Insp Ndlovu highlighted the importance of community cooperation in apprehending individuals engaged in illegal activities.
“We would like to appreciate the members of the public for providing the police with information that led to the arrest of the accused person,” she said.
She urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to unlawful trading in ivory or minerals, adding that offenders would face the full wrath of the law.
“We also warn members of the public to desist from unlawful dealing in ivory or minerals as they will face the law,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
