At least 346 suspects were arrested during a recently launched operation targeting people carrying dangerous weapons in public places across the country.

Police said some of the weapons seized are linked to serious crimes, including robbery, murder and assault.

In a statement, the national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation will continue until sanity is restored.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified Operation ‘No to Knives in Pockets/ Ingqamu Idingani Esikhwameni / Banga Rinodei Muhomwe’ as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder and robbery, in which dangerous weapons such as knives, machetes and catapults are commonly used,” he said.

“The operation follows concern over cases involving criminal elements carrying dangerous weapons, particularly knives and machetes, in public areas such as liquor outlets, nightclubs, mining settlements and residential areas. Petty disputes often escalate into serious acts of violence in these areas.”

Commissioner Nyathi added that, on May 18, 2026, police arrested 15 suspects under the operation, bringing the cumulative number of arrests to 346 since the operation began on May 9.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no justification for members of the public to carry knives, machetes or other dangerous weapons in public places,” he said.

He urged members of the public to cooperate with police during stop-and-search exercises and to report individuals found carrying dangerous weapons through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, via WhatsApp number 0712 800 197, or at the nearest police station.
