adminFOUR National Railways of Zimbabwe workers died and two others were injured when two goods trains collided on Friday night at Broomley Siding near Melfort along the Harare–Mutare railway.
The injured workers are recuperating from home after they were treated and discharged at Marondera Hospital.
NRZ spokesperson Mr Fanuel Masikati confirmed the accident to Sunday News.
“NRZ regrets to advise the public that four people died and two others were injured when two trains collided at Bromley Siding near Melfort along the Harare-Mutare railway line. Of the four crew members, one died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and three died on the spot,” he said.
Initial reports indicated that three people had died but another body was then later found.
“Initially reports had said three people died but as rescue workers were clearing the scene of the accident they discovered another body trapped under the rubble which brings the death toll to four. We assumed the person had gone missing but he was found under the rubble,” said Mr Masikati.
“As the NRZ we express our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolence to the bereaved families and we hope they find comfort during this difficult time. Also, we wish the other two workers who were injured a speedy recovery,” said Mr Masikati.
According to Mr Masikati, one train was going to Mutare carrying 15 huge granite blocks while the other goods train was carrying nine containers with an assortment of goods destined for Harare. He said the trains collided at around 8.20pm and workers have been working on restoring the line so that the tracks are opened and the situation returns to normalcy. Investigations to establish the cause of the accident are already underway.
