Two died on the spot, two on arrival at Gutu Mission Hospital while two others sustained severe injuries.
The injured were still in hospital receiving treatment.
The accident occurred along the Mute-Jaravaza Road in Soti-Source Resettlement area.
Governor Maluleke’s Land Cruiser had eight people on board, including the driver, when the accident occurred.
They were conducting Zanu-PF District-Cordinating Committee elections in Gutu district.
Acting Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula yesterday said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary but their names were being withheld until their next of kin have been notified.
“The bodies of the deceased were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary.
“Two other passengers who sustained severe injuries are also admitted at Gutu Mission Hospital and their condition is stable,” Assistant Inspector Mazula said.
She said initial indications were that the driver of the vehicle, one Givemore Shara lost control and hit a concrete embankment on approaching a small bridge along the road to Mpandawana Growth Point.
The vehicle overturned and plunged into the riverbed before landing on its back.
The driver and another passenger managed to escape unhurt.
Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial chairman Cde Lovemore Matuke expressed sorrow over the death of the four party cadres from Chiredzi.
“It is a major loss to us as a party especially considering that they died while busy conducting DCC elections in Gutu,” said Mr Matuke.
“It is really a sad loss to the party and we will forever miss and remember them as dedicated and committed cadres who died while in the line of duty for a party they called home.”
He said burial arrangements would be announced in due course.
Cde Matuke said the death of the four party cadres has resulted in the postponement of DCC elections for Chiredzi that were scheduled for today.
