At least 40 new toilets have been built in the Annex New Lines in Mbare following the delivery of 20 000 bricks bought by JB Foundation.
The project will allow each household in the area to have its own toilet as opposed to the public toilets that residents used, which were condemned.
Ward 4 Mbare Councillor Boniface Maburutse confirmed the development.
“Annex New Lines has a challenge with toilets. Since the houses were built many years back, they did not have toilets inside and residents used public toilets,” he said.
“The public toilets were eventually condemned because they were overloaded and there were sewer bursts as the pipes were overwhelmed. So the council came up with the programme to have residents build their own toilets, pay connection fees to the council so that they can have a toilet per household as well as water.
“But residents could not afford to build the toilets and asked businesspeople in the community and they engaged JB Foundation. And we asked them to work in the community, resulting in Mr Chihombe and his team and the procurement of the first 20 000 bricks. So far, 40 toilets have been built and sewer connections are being carried out as we speak.”
Cllr Maburutse said by March, 80 toilets are expected to have been constructed for each household.
