Epworth secretary Mr Kizito Muhombo yesterday said there were people from outside Epworth who illegally built houses in areas designated for other developments.
In an interview, Mr Muhombo said suspected conmen were selling stands to unsuspecting people.
“The problem we are facing is that there are conmen who are selling these stands without our knowledge.
“We are on the verge of evicting more than 400 families who have occupied these areas.
“Some of the places they have occupied have been reserved for road dualisation and some are wetlands and are not suitable for settlements,” said Mr Muhombo.
Mr Muhombo said that the illegal settlements were disturbing land use planning by council.
“There is no planning done by these illegal settlers, the houses are built haphazard and this has distracted council’s plan.”
He said with the continued surge of illegal settlements environmental degradation was a cause for concern as people poach sand to sell to those building houses.
“Sand extraction has also become the main problem with increased levels in the area which is conducted by these illegal settlers,” he said.
