416 killed in accidents

on Tuesday.

The accidents and deaths have increased compared to last year where 368 people were killed while 3 523 were injured in 8257 accidents recorded.

Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council managing director Mr Obio Chinyere said these accidents were recorded between January and March this year.

“The figures could be more as some motorists negotiate and do not report the accidents to police,” he said.

Mr Chinyere said the major cause of accidents was human error, inappropriate speed, tyre bursts, drink and driving and poor vehicle maintenance.

“We have come up with interventions such as the defensive driving course, practical road craft assessments, driver vision tests and carrying out safety blitz in conjuction with the Zimbabwe Republic police,” Mr Chinyere said.

“We are also continuing to research on causes of traffic accidents, road safety best practices and lobbying for the enactment of necessary legislation as well as formulation of apt policies aimed at addressing road carnage,” Mr Chinyere said.

Zimbabwe’s roads are turning into death traps, especially during holidays.
