Fugitive youth chair nabbed

been arrested.

Muchinenyika yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to June 19.

Ms Tshuma advised Muchinenyika to apply for bail at the High Court. His other 29 accomplices are already on trial, which has since been postponed indefinitely.

High Court judge Justice Chinembiri Bhunu who is presiding over the case deferred the matter to give the defence team more time to file their application for discharge after the prosecution closed its case.

Charges against the activists arose on May 29, 2011 after they allegedly convened an unsanctioned meeting at Glen View 1 Shopping Centre, which was called off by the police.

The State says that Inspector Mutedza went to Glen View 3 as part of a reaction team assigned to disperse the group of alleged MDC-T supporters who were braaing and drinking beer at a bar. It is alleged Inspector Mutedza approached the activists and ordered them to disperse.

The activists  threw stones, empty bottles, steel stool frames and other missiles at the police.

Inspector Mutedza and his team allegedly took to their heels, with youths in hot pursuit. Inspector Mutedza rushed to a Nissan Hardbody that he mistakenly identified as a police vehicle and tried to open the door but the youths allegedly caught up with him and struck him with a brick. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
