Police have arrested more than 43 000 motorists under the ongoing operation code named “Tame the Traffic Jungle”.
The “Tame the Traffic Jungle” operation was launched in response to the increase in road accidents, which have been attributed to unlicenced and unroadworthy vehicles, operators offering public transport without proper licensing as well as reckless driving.

“The ZRP reports that a total of 43 154 arrests have been effected during the on-going operation ‘Tame the Traffic Jungle’.

“1 222 arrests have been made on vehicles without route permits, while 14 469 arrests have been made on illegal pirate taxis (mushikashika).

“342 motorists have been arrested for reckless driving, while 2 961 people have been arrested for touting.

“1 048 vehicles have been impounded for moving on the roads with no registration plates,” police said in a statement.

The police have urged motorists to comply with the country’s traffic laws and regulations, and to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and licenced.

They have also called on the public to report any illegal or unsafe transport operators.
