Government has released $4 million for the construction of 17 new schools to reduce the deficit of educational facilities in Zimbabwe.
The funds are about 20 percent of a $20 million fund set aside for the construction of new schools in each of the country’s provinces.
Construction for each school is pegged at about $1,3 million.
The project has since started with some of the schools now above slab level.
In an interview recently, Primary and Secondary Education Ministry spokesperson Mr Patrick Zumbo said Government had allocated more resources to Mashonaland West province.
“Mashonaland West got a bigger allocation for four schools due to a serious shortage of schools in the province, which has the largest number of satellite schools,” he said.
“Each of the four schools in the province was allocated $1,3 million and Government has since disbursed 20 percent of that money with construction underway.”
The project is being financed by the OPEC Fund for International Development.
“The OPEC Fund has set aside $20 million for the project and the money is already there,” said Mr Zumbo.
“We are expecting that by October all the construction works would be complete.”
The new schools will have a library, teachers’ quarters, four classroom blocks, computer lab and administration block.
