Zimbabwe has been blessed with some world class footballers that have been able to put the country on the map in a footballing sense.
Whether by scoring goals for their country or by keeping clean sheets in the top leagues in the world, there are a number of Zimbabwean footballers that have made the game of football their own.
The best male footballers from Zimbabwe feature more than one household name adorning the list, compiled by .
Benjani Mwaruwari
Arguably the most well-known player on our list, Benjani Mwaruwari wowed football fans across the world throughout a career that began in 1999 with the Jomo Cosmos senior side and ended in 2014 with the Bidvest Wits.
His most prolific spells came with English side Portsmouth, where he spent three years and made 70 appearances. His 19 goals saw him tap in efforts and smash screamers into the top corner, and this earned him a move to Manchester City in 2008.
However, he struggled to hit the heights many had hoped he would, with his best days coming at Portsmouth, where his hat-tricks and high work rate saw him achieve fan favourite status at Fratton Park.
His international career saw Benjani play between 1999 and 2010, scoring 10 goals in 42 appearances. Benjani captained the Zimbabwe national team and remains one of the best known Zimbabwean footballers of all time.
Bruce Grobbelaar
Bruce Grobbelaar is one of the best-known goalkeepers to have played the game of football. The former-Liverpool shot stopper was instrumental in many of the successes of the Reds both domestically and abroad.
He was part of six separate First Division winning sides, while he won three FA Cups, three League Cups, five Charity Shields, one Super Cup and, perhaps most impressive, the European Cup in the 1983/84 season.
Grobbelaar made a total of 628 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, while he turned out for Zimbabwe 33 times between 1977 and 1998, almost helping his side to the 1994 World Cup. His athletic and exuberant style of goalkeeping made him a household name all over the world.
Peter Ndlovu
Peter Ndlovu is another well-known and wildly popular player to hail from Zimbabwe. The forward managed to hit the back of the net 37 times across his 100 appearances for his country making him the top scorer for his side.
Ndlovu became a household name during his stint with Coventry City in the Premier League. He made history as the first African footballer to play in the English Premier League when he appeared on August 19, 1992. With City, he scored 39 goals in 176 appearances, while he also appeared for Huddersfield Town on loan along with Sheffield United.
Returning to the national fold as the assistant manager between 2011-2013, Ndlovu’s involvement with the Zimbabwean football team has spanned across 23 years. The diminutive forward has been able to cement his place as one of the greatest attackers the country has ever produced.
Knowledge Musona
Knowledge Musona is currently plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League for . Prior to his stint in Saudi Arabia, Musona has played in South Africa, Belgium and Germany. His most prolific scoring stint came with Oostende, where he scored 35 goals in 104 appearances.
This run came after unsuccessful spells as Hoffenheim and Augsburg. Frustratingly for Musona, he was not really able to replicate the sort of form that allowed him to star for Kaizer Chiefs between 2009-2011, where he scored 19 goals in 49 games.
However, while his club career has been up and down, he generally enjoyed his time playing for the national side. Musona has scored 16 goals for his country, meaning he is only behind Ndlovu as the leading scorer in international football for Zimbabwe.
A particular highlight came as he scored a hat-trick for Zimbabwe against Liberia in a 3-0 win during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying rounds.
Khama Billiat
Khama Billiat began his senior career with CAPS United where he scored two goals in five appearances. Immediately convinced by his quality, Ajax Cape Town moved for the winger, with this beginning a successful 83 game stint with the side as he scored 24 goals.
His goals and performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he scored 41 times in 101 outings to further underline his attacking qualities.
For Zimbabwe, Billiat has managed to score 15 goals for his country. This puts his behind only a handful of players in the list of the highest scoring players in the game for Zimbabwe.
He also had the honour of captaining his national team against South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifier.
