The driver of a Magunje-bound Mazda Bongo kombi tried to overtake another omnibus when it collided with an on-coming haulage truck near Chiduzhwi, 10 kilometres after Karoi.
Four people died on the spot while the fifth died on admission to Karoi General Hospital.
Four of the dead have been identified as the driver David Innocent (23) and passengers, Founder Chanetsa (34), Lovemore Bamusi (17) and Shupikai Mudyiwa (30). The other person is yet to been identified.
Of the injured three were transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare while 14 were by yesterday, still admitted to Karoi General Hospital.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the accident, saying preliminary investigations show that the driver of the Bongo failed to adhere to road regulations.

“I can confirm that five people died in an accident along the Karoi-Magunje Road when the vehicle they were travelling in failed to overtake in time to return to the proper lane and collided with a haulage truck,” he said.
Insp Mabgweazara urged motorists, especially commuter omnibus drivers to value human life by adhering to road rules, saying the accident could have been avoided.
Meanwhile, two other people died on the same day when a commuter omnibus tried to avoid a broken down truck and collided with an on-coming truck at the 28-kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
