“As at 9am today (yesterday) we had recorded only five deaths, while 22 people had been injured,” said Insp Chishaka.
“Last year during the same period 72 people were injured and this shows a massive decrease in deaths and injuries.”
Insp Chishaka said police impounded 87 vehicles as compared to the 158 that were impounded during the same period last year.
He attributed most of the accidents to human error.
“Most of the accidents are a result of speeding, overtaking errors and failing to adhere to simple rules like giving way,” said Insp Chishaka.
“We continue to urge our motorists to observe road rules.
“To passengers who board public transport, we say do not be the extra person in overloaded vehicles because you are likely to be the cause of the accident.”
The independence holiday came a few days after 21 people perished when a Beitbridge-bound bus veered off the road and crashed into a tree along the Masvingo-Beitbridge road on Monday morning. The driver of the MegaLink bus reportedly failed to negotiate a curve at the 92km peg at around 2am.
