Seasoned actor and dancer Mehluli Gomez Dube, is beaming with pride after being appointed lead choreographer for all theatre and dance productions at the landmark 50 Days at the Theatre festival.
The initiative, spearheaded by arts luminary Simon Mambazo Phiri in celebration of his 50th birthday, kicks off today and will run until November 1, featuring an impressive 74 shows. The programme promises a rich blend of music, theatre, dance, poetry and visual art in a dynamic creative journey.
Among the productions Gomez is choreographing are Khokhoba Township, Zwelethu, Griiii Eshe, Live in Bulawayo, Zambezi Express, and a brand-new piece titled Movement and Dance (MAD in Africa).
Gomez’s professional relationship with Mambazo began in 2013, when he starred as lead dancer in the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) production. His performance earned Mambazo’s trust and led to further opportunities, including appearances at the African Union Youth Games (2014) and the Milano Expo in Italy (2015).

“To be chosen as part of the production team for 50 Days at the Theatre is a result of my understanding of Mambazo’s demands, standards and expectations in every production. I’m grateful to lead other creatives as we aim to make history with this project,” said Gomez.
The Emabuthweni-born dancer is overseeing a diverse pool of talent from groups such as Umkhathi, Iyasa, Siyaya, Ezimnyama, Vocal Ex and Simunye Simunye, among others.
“To play such a major role is an excellent reference for my career. I’m leading an incredible crew of artistes, and together, we’re determined to make history.”
Of all the productions, Gomez revealed a special fondness for MAD in Africa, a new show crafted from scratch that features over 20 dances from across the continent.
“Another production close to my heart is Zambezi Express. We’ve reimagined the play with emerging young talents, who have successfully filled the shoes of the great thespians who made the original iconic,” he said.
Gomez also praised the youthful creative energy behind the scenes, highlighting the contributions of Thembelani Mdlaziba, Makula Moyo and Nomashawekazi Damasane. He said their ambition and dedication were instrumental in bringing the festival’s concept to life.
As anticipation builds, Gomez urged theatre lovers to show their support.
“50 Days at the Theatre will deliver diverse and enriching experiences. Those who attended the official launch last Friday can testify that Bulawayo’s arts scene is alive again,” he said.
