A Bulawayo sculptor, Alex Mugede, who believes a goblin is responsible for football giant, Dynamos (DeMbare) Football Club’s continuous dominance over Highlanders (Bosso) is cashing in on a piece that depicts an imp in DeMbare colours, ahead of the match at Barbourfields stadium tomorrow.
Mugede said the piece, Gurajena, which is being sold for $50, was a goblin responsible for DeMbare’s continuous dominance of Bosso for the past nine years.
The sculpture depicts an old man with huge ears clad in DeMbare colours — blue and white — seated on a football as a stool. With his tongue sticking out, the goblin will be hard at work holding a black clay pot which has red detailing. In his left hand, he will be holding a black fly whisk (itshoba).
“I was inspired to make the piece because I believe that there’s a goblin responsible for Dynamos’ wins against Bosso. DeMbare always wins narrowly or by benefiting from a refereeing error,” said Mugede.
He said he had so far sold seven sculptures from his New Lobengula base, with some orders yet to be processed.
“The piece is $50 and a lot of people are showing interest in buying. I’m overwhelmed with orders from supporters of Dynamos and ironically others from Highlanders who say they want to expose the goblin.
“They say this will perhaps break the jinx,” said Mugede who has been producing Gurajena pieces for the past four weeks.
One of Mugede’s clients, a Dynamos fan, bought the mythical sculpture saying DeMbare would prevail over Bosso by a 2-1 score line.
“I sold the sculpture to a Dynamos fan who claims that he dreamt Gurajena telling him that Bosso will lose to Dynamos by a marginal 2-1 score line. This prediction is in line with Dynamos’ past wins.”
The sculptor, an avid football supporter who learnt how to mould sculptures at the Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre, hopes to cash in on the match tomorrow.
“I don’t have a particular team that I support, I just love football,” said Mugede.
Bulawayo will tomorrow be a sea of black, white and blue as fans head to Barbourfields Stadium for the much awaited clash of the giants.
The fans are expected to sing themselves hoarse as they support their respective teams.
