The Women Corporate Directors Network Zimbabwe, a wing of the Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe, has honoured 50 most inspirational women in the country for their resilience and dedication, which continue to inspire many.

The awards ceremony, held recently, sought to honour women who are breaking barriers in science, leading with compassion in community service or championing justice and equality, exemplifying strength and grace.

Among the most inspirational women awarded were  Mutapa Investment Fund senior legal manager Yvonne Kudzai Gombera, Grain Marketing Board human resources manager Nyaradzo Makoni and Petrotrade chief executive officer Jasmine Howera.

Guest of honour at the awards, Dr Nomathemba Ndiweni, the deputy chairperson of the Public Service Commission of Zimbabwe, said the awards were a testament to the power of women who inspire and lead with purpose.

“They recognise the outstanding contributions of women in various sectors, from business and entrepreneurship to arts and culture, education and healthcare.

“By celebrating these achievements, we promote a culture of empowerment, encouraging more women to pursue their dreams and make a meaningful impact,” she said.

Dr Ndiweni noted that women’s empowerment is crucial for Zimbabwe’s development, as empowered women contribute significantly to the economy, education, healthcare and social welfare.

“They are the backbone of our communities, and their participation is essential for achieving our national goals,” she said.

She highlighted that Vision 2030 aims to transform Zimbabwe into an empowered and prosperous society, and women can significantly contribute to achieving the vision.

“Women can participate in entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership, driving economic growth and development.

“They can also play a vital role in shaping the next generation, promoting education and developing skills that align with our national goals,” she said.

According to Dr Ndiweni, women can also contribute to improving healthcare outcomes, promoting social welfare and supporting vulnerable populations.

“Despite progress, women in Zimbabwe still face challenges such as gender-based violence, a persistent issue that affects women’s empowerment and participation.

“Limited access to education and economic opportunities, as women often face barriers to accessing education, training and economic opportunities,” she said.

However, Dr Ndiweni said these challenges also presented opportunities for growth, innovation and collaboration.

“By working together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women to thrive,” she said.

Meanwhile, those awarded for inspirational leadership and governance of listed companies included Ms Wendy Madzura, brand ambassador for Seed Co Limited; Mrs Caroline Sandura, chairperson of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange; Ms Tandiwe Linda Masunda, investments chief executive at ZB Bank; and FBC Insurance managing director Ms Alice Shumba.

Inspirational awards for environmental, social and governance leadership were awarded to Sanguita Popatlal, chief director of legal services in the Office of the President and Cabinet; while former President of the Senate Edna Madzongwe was awarded the lifetime achievement award.

Zimbabwe Media Commission chairperson Professor Ruby Magosvongwe was recognised under the Leadership and Governance in Government and Parastatals, alongside POSB chief finance officer Maria Gunde; Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe chairperson Ms Nonkosi Ncube and University of Zimbabwe executive director Ms Florence Mutambanengwe, among others.

Under the inspirational awards for Leadership and Governance for Private Companies, those recognised included  Zimplats chief financial officer Ms Patricia Zvandasara, Booties Pharmacies managing director Ms Daisy Chavundura and Steelmakers human resources director Patience Mapondo.

Under the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) category, individuals recognised included Rutendo Muchero, founder of CB Muchero Innovation Hub; Dr Patricia Gonde, founder of Girls Leading Our World; and Advocate Nyaradzo Maphosa, partner at Sawyer & Mkushi.

Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe executive director Dr Proctor Nyemba said the key objectives of the 50 Inspirational Women Awards were to recognise and celebrate the achievements, leadership and contributions of women across various sectors.

“Through this initiative, the goal is to foster empowerment, raise awareness about women’s impactful roles and encourage continued progress towards an inclusive and equitable society.

“Ultimately, the awards seek to motivate women to pursue their aspirations and to cultivate a culture of appreciation and support for women’s achievements,” he said.

Dr Nyemba added that the awards will have a profound and positive impact on the women who receive them by boosting their confidence, acknowledging their efforts and encouraging them to continue making meaningful contributions.

“Recognition can serve as a powerful motivator, inspiring recipients to pursue new opportunities and assume leadership roles,” he said.

Dr Nyemba also highlighted that for the broader community, the awards will foster greater awareness and appreciation of women’s achievements, challenging gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality.

“By highlighting these success stories, the initiative can inspire other women and girls to aspire to their goals, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive, progressive and empowered society,” he said.

He noted that women play a vital role in shaping the future of our societies and economy by bringing diverse perspectives, innovative ideas and collaborative leadership styles that drive sustainable development and social progress.

“Their contributions span across all sectors, including business, politics, education, healthcare and community service, significantly influencing policies, economic growth and cultural transformation,” he said.

Governance Solutions president and chief executive officer Dr Debra Brown said women brought diverse perspectives, resilience and insights to the boardroom.

“Studies have shown that when women lead in governance, boards make better decisions, organisations innovate more and communities benefit more,” she said.

Dr Brown said when organisations flourished, communities prospered and nations were transformed.

“That is the power of reflection, vision and governance working together. This honour is not only about recognition of individual achievements, but it is also a beacon for the next generation of women leaders who will follow in your footsteps,” she said.
