6 perish in crash

AT least six people died while scores were injured in a head-on collision involving a Kukura Kurerwa bus and a Mitsubishi Canter truck along the Harare-Bindura highway yesterday morning. The accident occurred at the 49-kilometre peg at around 9 am when the bus, heading towards Harare tried to overtake three commuter omnibuses before ramming into the truck which was heading towards Bindura.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.
“The driver of a Kukura Kurerwa bus coming to Harare had 53 passengers on board.

“As the bus approached the 49-kilometre peg, the driver encroached to the right lane intending to overtake a commuter omnibus.

“During the process the bus collided with a Mitsubishi Canter which was coming from Harare. The truck landed on its wheels on the right side of the road. Five people died on the scene while the sixth died on admission to Bindura Hospital.”

Senior Asst Comm Charamba said the injured were taken to Concession and Bindura hospitals while others were treated and discharged.
She said drivers should exercise caution on all local and major roads before, during and after the forthcoming holidays.
