SIXTY participants have registered for the third edition of the John Landa Nkomo golf tournament to be held at Bulawayo’s Harry Allen Golf Club next month.
The annual competition will be held on September 17, with organisers hopeful of also attracting young golfers between the ages of five and 16 years.
The tournament began in 2014 following the successful launch of the John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust in memory of the late Vice President.
JLNMT chairperson and son to the late VP Jabulani Nkomo said the tournament is part of projects meant to keep his father’s memory alive.
He said their thrust is to nurture young golfers by exposing them to experienced players early in their careers.
“The idea is to support up-and-coming young golfers excel and we’re working hand in hand with the Matabeleland Golf Association, among other donors,” said Nkomo.
“The John Landa Nkomo golf tournament will be running for its third consecutive year. We’re also expecting to have junior golfers between the ages of five and 16.”
He said golf was not taken seriously and the tourney was aimed at opening avenues for junior golfers.
“We’ve observed that a few children have adopted golf as their sport, as they prefer cricket and soccer, among other sporting disciplines,” Nkomo said.
The tournament has previously attracted professional golfers and high ranking politicians — @nqotshili
