More than 600 families in Ward 11 in Chiweshe have benefited from over 30 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate fertiliser donated under President Mugabe’s Presidential Well Wishers Inputs Support Scheme.
The villagers hailed the programme, which they said contributed immensely towards household and national food security. Speaking at the handover ceremony held at Corner Store, Chinyemba Village, in Chiweshe last Wednesday, Ward 11 councillor Cde Daniel Chinyemba said the programme was moving smoothly.
“The programme of issuing out fertiliser to my ward is progressing well, we are thankful that half of the people in this area who are supposed to benefit have been given their share.
“The farmers have received a full package of inputs. At first they received seed and basal fertilisers and now we have distributed top dressing fertilisers. The scheme has come to our rescue since people were struggling to get the farming inputs for this season,” said Clr Chinyemba.
Clr Chinyemba said he was happy that the programme would go some way in alleviating poverty in his ward.
“We thank President Mugabe for the scheme since many people are benefiting and we wish it to be expanded so that farmers could do better. They have the capacity and potential to produce more if they get more inputs,” he said.
Clr Chinyemba hailed President Mugabe for his support to the nation since distribution of inputs cuts across political boundaries. “When we are distributing fertilisers we do not use political boundaries, instead we do administrative boundaries as a village. We are not discriminating against anyone since it was a directive to us to give it to every household from Government,” he said.
Cde Eustina Nyanjima, secretary of the scheme in Ward 11, said it was a good gesture by the President to come to their aid.
“We would like to thank our President for being considerate as he has managed to provide us with farming inputs for a long time. This is the second time we are distributing fertiliser following another batch of 600 farmers who received some inputs last Friday,” she said.
Howard farmer Mrs Benhilda Matope urged Government to continue availing more inputs for them to earn a living through farming.
